Ben AKILI

I have been an investigative journalist in the DRC for 5 years, and a general journalist for 7 years. I am much more specialised in mining and environmental issues, especially as the DRC, especially in its eastern and southern parts, is full of mining areas that are exploited by foreign companies. I’m interested in these issues because I want to defend the rights of local people and demonstrate the extent to which various companies are not complying with the terms of their contracts. My articles and investigations are produced as part of the fight against corruption and illegal financial flows, with a view to promoting democracy in the regions where all these blunders are taking place. I currently head the Congolese Investigative Journalists’ Network and I’m also a member of GIJN AFRICA, a network of journalists interested in investigation, data journalism and fact checking in French-speaking Africa.
